Executive Profile

Lindsay Somerville

CEO and Principal Advisor, LNS Private Clients

More than four decades at the intersection of business leadership, private wealth, governance, taxation, professional services and trusted advisory relationships.

Introduction

A commercially pragmatic executive and trusted advisor

Lindsay Somerville is a commercially pragmatic executive, entrepreneur, former EY Partner and trusted advisor with more than 40 years of experience spanning Family Office leadership, private client advisory, taxation, financial management, governance, risk, business transformation and strategic commercial leadership.

His record includes building specialist practices, establishing boutique family-office businesses, leading multidisciplinary teams and advising high-net-worth families, private enterprises, boards and senior executives.

He is based in Brisbane, Queensland, and works with clients whose interests span operating businesses, investments, property, philanthropy, succession and cross-border structures.

Executive Leadership

Running businesses rather than only advising them

As an EY Partner, Lindsay held full accountability for the profit and loss, people, client relationships, recruitment, quality assurance and performance of major taxation practices in Canberra and Brisbane. He built the Canberra specialist tax practice to approximately 25 professionals, and subsequently grew the Brisbane tax practice from approximately 65 professionals to approximately 130 while maintaining a highly profitable and competitive market position.

He later founded, built and operated two complementary advisory businesses, merged them and completed their sale — a full ownership cycle that informs how he assesses risk, value and organisational design.

Across both settings, leadership has meant direct involvement: recruiting, mentoring, setting standards and being accountable for the outcome.

Commercial Perspective

Judgement formed by ownership and accountability

Lindsay approaches commercial questions with an owner's mindset. Decisions are weighed in terms of years and generations rather than quarterly outcomes, with protection of capital and thoughtful management of risk preceding the pursuit of growth — while recognising that capital should also be deployed intelligently to create sustainable long-term value.

He is prepared to challenge an otherwise attractive opportunity where it does not align with the objectives, values or risk appetite of the family or business he serves.

His technical foundation in taxation, structuring, financial management and regulatory obligation allows him to interrogate advice properly, rather than accept it at face value.

Trusted Advisor

Trust earned through consequence, not credentials

Throughout his career Lindsay has been trusted by high-net-worth families, business owners, boards and senior executives with matters carrying significant commercial, financial and personal consequences.

He has been entrusted as Co-Executor and Trustee of a major Family Office client's Will and appointed Power of Attorney — responsibilities that reflect a level of personal confidence and discretion that cannot be created simply through professional credentials.

He was also selected by EY National to undertake technical, quality and business-profitability reviews across capital-city tax practices, independently assessing operations and reporting recommendations for national consideration.

Leadership Philosophy

Ask the right questions; make the decision properly

Lindsay's view is that a chief executive does not need to be the technical expert in every discipline. The requirement is to know which questions to ask, which adviser to engage, when to challenge advice, and how to turn specialist input into a sound decision.

Strong governance underpins that. The objective is not governance for its own sake, but ensuring the right decisions are made by the right people, with appropriate information and independent advice, while protecting principals from unnecessary complexity or interference in operational matters.

Where family or shareholder dynamics are involved, he remains neutral, discreet and emotionally intelligent, while ensuring difficult issues can be discussed honestly and constructively.

Personal Approach

Calm, considered and closely involved

Colleagues and clients describe a leadership style that is calm and considered in complex decision-making, discreet with sensitive and confidential matters, and mentoring-led through direct exposure, practical demonstration and guidance.

He works collaboratively to create alignment across diverse stakeholders while maintaining accountability, integrity and clear decision-making.

The result is a working relationship built for the long term rather than the transaction.

Listening carefully, asking the right questions, providing clear advice, and being prepared to deliver difficult messages when long-term interests require it.
